On building & inhabiting a dream
The tension between what and how is an emotional balance: What is becoming. How is control. To live fixated only in the realm of what we can control is to become very little—because very little is what we can control.
August was my 20th anniversary of life abroad. I left Texas for Central Europe in 2006, for the Bohemian valley of Prague. The goal was to stay for a year to figure out the next move. Instead I got divorced and decided not to board my return flight home, because I could not afford to come back. Although I barely afforded—not just financially—the next 14 years staying in Czech Republic.
Miku Is Missing partly takes place in Prague. And while the novel is fiction and wildly exaggerated, the spirit, attitude, and some locations, that characterize my experiences and relationships are certainly seeping in; because some things you just can't make up.
I have moved the project from a plot-sketch in Notion to a Git repo to flesh the first draft out. Branching feels natural for work that has many threads and layers. We'll see after a first draft, but I may not move the project into Scrivener until I'm ready to compile a final*. Meanwhile, I use Typora for word processing.
